SHUKUGAWA-CHO

〜SHUKUGAWA-CHO Sceneries to the eyes of Japan’s greatest writers in their younger days〜

Poet Tokiko Iwatani spent her childhood in Shukugawa.  Contemporary writer Haruki Murakami lived as a “HANSHINKAN SHONEN” in Shukugawa, Ashiya.  Junnichiro Tanizaki moved to Shukugawa after the Great Kanto Earthquake.  Yasushi Inoue spent his newspaper reporter days in Shukugawa.

The river “SHUKUGAWA”, which flows through Nishinomiya, has brought up many writers.  You can find scenes from Shukugawa in many of their most famous works.  Sometimes as the main stage of the story.  Sometimes, as a scene in an imaginary place that appears in the story.  And even when they talk about their childhood days and dearest memories.

When you walk along Shukugawa, you can find many places that are related to literature.  They are scenes that were in the memories of the great writers, long before the novels came out to the world.  Why not go for a stroll along the river, and see what Japan’s greatest writers saw in their youth.
